The McAllen Farmers Market is a participant in the GO TEXAN program in addition to being certified as a farmers market by the Texas Department of Agriculture.
Access to locally grown vegetables, artisan goods, learning opportunities, creative space for the arts, and collaboration among community-based organizations are all promoted by the McAllen Farmers Market, which acts as a hub of activity for community participation.
The McAllen Farmers Market has been showered with tremendous support from the community’s various organizations as well as its local businesses. The City of McAllen, the McAllen Public Library, La Salud del Valle, Alegre Despertar, Good Day Valley, and the RGV Chapter of the Texas Chef’s Association have joined forces to promote access to locally grown produce that is grown without the use of any chemicals and to provide opportunities for local farmers, ranchers, bakers, and artisans to sell their products directly to consumers.
Consumers have the opportunity to purchase locally grown vegetables and fruit, fresh eggs from free-range chickens, raw and natural honey, nuts, dried fruit, a variety of baked foods, health and beauty items, repurposed crafts, and handcrafted jewelry at the McAllen Farmers Market. In addition to making local produce available to those living in the Rio Grande Valley, the mission of the McAllen Farmers Market is to educate people about the myriad of positive outcomes that can be achieved by adopting a healthier diet.
In addition, educational opportunities are made available in the form of cooking demos and seminars given by students. At the McAllen Farmers Market, members of the Texas Chef’s Association RGV Chapter, as well as nutritionists and health coaches, share their expertise and enthusiasm with customers by making delectable meals that are high in nutrients and made with fresh, locally grown produce and goods from the market’s sellers. Students from the area’s secondary schools, colleges, and universities share their knowledge and the results of their study with the community.
The expansion of the McAllen Farmers Market can be attributed to the collaborative efforts of a large number of people who are committed to the market. We have high hopes that one day, food that is fresh, local, and produced without the use of any chemicals would be more easily accessible.
