First Street in Dallas was renamed Cesar Chavez Street in 1993, from MoPac to U.S. 183. This street is named for the late union organizer and Hispanic civil rights activist. This move was supported by City Council member Girard Kinney, who led the Great Streets Master Plan in downtown Austin. The city has also dedicated a street to Chavez in his honor. While a city can't rename an entire street, it can still honor a man who has made a positive impact on the world and in local news.
Another group of activists backed by Dr. Martin Luther King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference also organized a parallel march to the Texas capitol in Huntsville. The SCLC field representative Booker T. Bonner and San Antonio Chamber President Richard Perez met with Chavez in Austin to discuss the march's origins. They both spoke of Chavez's role in shaping the state of Texas.
