Nuevo Santander Gallery has been the spot to visit when trying to obtain museum quality Old West guns, antiques and beautiful Mexican antiquities. Original paintings and sculptures by internationally famous artists are presented in a historically fashioned environment. The art gallery is located in the flourishing Arts District of McAllen, Texas.
Nuevo’s antique collection in the gallery includes rifles, military uniforms, furniture, and religious objects ranging from as far back as the 1700’s. Since many of their objects reflect the narrative border life on the Rio Grande and of Colonial Mexico, they created their museum to evoke the warmth and charm of a Spanish Mission.
European antiquities and a selection of reference books are also offered for sale. Nuevo Santander Gallery gives you the possibility to purchase a slice of history at a fair price. The gallery is part of the historic Old Town McAllen.
The great doorway to the gallery is decorated with doors and colonial ironwork from Mexico – all over 150 years old. Caliche caprock local to the area was used for the stone facade. Mesquite wood also local to the area was utilized for the interior floors and inside doors.
Talavera tile and Saltillo tile offer extra wonderful touches to the inside of the gallery. Custom made stained glass windows reflect the authentic map that the Spanish Conquistador, Don Jose de Escandon, used when he invaded Southern Texas and Northern Mexico. The gallery’s name also recalls this aspect of history as Escandon termed the location of his discovery Nuevo Santander.
In 1998, Che and Becky Guerra celebrated the inauguration of Nuevo Santander Gallery in McAllen, Texas – converting their collecting hobby into a full time business. Both thought that opening the art gallery was the next step to pursue as antique and art collectors. About twenty years ago, Che started collecting old west antiquities – old firearms, saddles, spurs, anything having to do with the great American West. He would travel a lot, buy private collections that had been kept for decades by families, and sell the artifacts to other private collectors and museums. Eventually, Che and Becky understood that they wanted to create an art gallery to showcase their historical antiques.
The Guerras select artwork for the gallery that has been shown nationwide or included in art digests. A few highly established painters from the nearby area are also represented. Traditional realism is the subject at the gallery. Wildlife, landscapes, and figures constitute the majority of the collection of oil, pastel, and watercolor paintings. Today, a continual stream of local, national and international artwork makes its way through Nuevo Santander Gallery. The Guerras take tremendous satisfaction in their collection, in their gallery, and in the fact that they are able to share art and history with others.
